How to Stop Steam from Updating on Startup

Steam is set up by default to update your game anytime; automatically, it detects a network connection. Although this strategy is incredibly successful because Steam updates in the back while the user conducts his chores on the pc, it can also be inconvenient for users with metered/limited internet connections.

Although there is no precise way to disable all global automatic updates with a single button, there are alternatives. First, examine the procedures indicated below.

You are stopping a game’s automatic update.

A setting allows you to prevent all email notifications for a particular game. This approach is quite effective and simple since you can easily toggle it using your Steam client. Nevertheless, if you have many Steam games loaded, this might be a time-consuming procedure.

Launch the Steam .

  • Navigate to the Collection tab at the top of the screen. All of your games will now be displayed in the left column of a screen.
  • Select Properties from the context menu when you right-click on the game you wish to edit the settings for.

Why should I disable Steam Auto Updates?

In most circumstances, automated updates are useful features that every user should use. However, as a general guideline, we encourage you to keep your applications up to current at all times.

However, one of the most likely causes why users wish to turn off Steam Auto Updates, is to save space and data.

Now, let’s see what you can do in minutes to disable this option.

It is setting time limits for auto-updates.

You can set auto-update time limitations if your internet connection is poor during working hours due to Steam upgrading the games. This setting will force Steam only to update your games at that time. This is very beneficial since you can easily set the time when you’re not using your computer, such as when you go to bed. Steam may update as well, and you will not be bothered. It’s a win-win situation.

  • Launch the Steam.
  • You’ll notice a Steam option in the upper left corner—select Settings from the drop-down box after clicking it.
  • Navigate to the Download tab on the left side. You will see a section in the Downloads settings.

Bandwidth restriction

There is another option for avoiding “a lot” of data used in the background. You keep all of the Steam settings alone and restrict the download bandwidth. This will ensure that Valve does not utilize more speed than you requested, and you’ll be able to complete other internet-related tasks without lag or delay.

  • Launch the Steam client
  • You’ll notice a Steam option in the upper left corner—select Settings from the dropdown list after clicking it.
  • Navigate to the Download tab on the left side. Limit Bandwidth is an option in the area of Download Restrictions. You’ll be able to do so if you click it.

By changing Appmanifest, you may disable auto-update.

Although this technique attempts to prevent global auto-updates by modifying the Appmanifest settings, it is not suggested since you may inadvertently change any parameter you are unaware of, leading to difficulties later on. Therefore, when using this approach, exercise extreme caution.

From here, navigate to the official Notepad ++ website. Then, click the Download icon in the lower-left corner of the screen.

  • Through all phases, click Next to download the program to any place.
  • Launch the application after it has been installed and select File (present on the top left).
  • Choose Open from the drop-down option.
  • Browse to your Steam folder and then to the Steamapps folder.
  • “C: Program Files (x86)Steam” should be the default setting for your steam folder.
  • Look for a file called “app manifest. acf” in the Steamapps folder. It’s possible that the names aren’t precisely the same, so don’t worry.
  • If there are many files with the name app manifest, you must modify them. Notepad ++ should launch when you click OK.

Disabling Steam to launch at boot

Another option is to prevent Steam from automatically starting up when you switch on your computer. As you may have observed, Steam starts up whenever you switch on your computer. Because Steam can update if it is open, that solution also effectively fixes the issue.

  • Launch the Steam client.
  • After clicking Steam in the upper right corner of the screen, go to Settings.
  • Now, under the left column of the Settings, click on the Interface tab and uncheck the item that says “Run Steam when my machine begins.” Save your changes and then depart.

Steam will now only open when users open it via the Valve client or click on any game.

Disable Steam’s startup process

Steam processes are launched in the background by default whenever the Windows 10 PC boots. In this approach, Steam ensures that the auto-update operates in the environment all the time and keeps your games up to date.

Steam will no longer launch automatically when you boot up Windows 10, and the update procedure will take place only when you activate the program or a Steam game.

Disable automatic updates for the Steam Client

You should be aware that preventing the Valve client from updating is strongly advised, as Valve is continually upgrading the client’s security and stability. If you do not update your client to the most recent version, you are placing yourself in danger.

However, this may be something you’ll have to do temporarily. For example, if you download a big game that would take many days to download, you cannot shut off your PC since the downloaded contents will be lost.

Hibernation will save your system’s current state and continue your download.

Stop the Auto-update on a single game

Remember to turn off your Connection to the internet every time you start a game.

You may use this approach to disable all cars on a single game. Many users have attested that it is effective. Steam will be unable to connect to the server, and the auto-update procedure will not begin if your internet service is disabled. So you’ll be able to play without being interrupted.

Although the approach works flawlessly, it will get tedious if you have got many games in your Library.

Final Verdict

Another issue discussed in the Steam forums is for Steam to check all of its files before fully shutting Steam (rather than letting Windows kill it as it shuts down). Then, wait whatever long it typically takes to check files and enter the steam Distribution interface before closing Steam using the contextual menu (or system tray icon) and resuming it.
